Shaping GME | Call for Comments
The process convened specialty-specific writing groups, who, along with members of the specialty community and leaders from other specialties and related fields, rigorously and creatively considered what the specialty will look like in the future (recognizing that the future is marked with significant uncertainty). Out of this process, the Writing Group will draft and propose revisions to the Program Requirements that will prepare the learners for current practice and generations to come.
The following writing groups request feedback. The scenario-based planning summary of themes and insights is posted for review and comment here. Submit comments using the electronic review and comment form.

NEW! Program Requirements for Congenital Cardiac Surgery Updated
Significant changes include: the requirement that all programs be 24 months in length; and revisions to procedural minima to reflect the increased program duration. The revised Case Log minima can be found under Documents and Resources in the Thoracic Surgery section of the ACGME website and are in effect for fellows who began their program July 1, 2023.
Accredited programs should provide the following materials during their Accreditation Data System (ADS) Annual Update:
- An updated block diagram demonstrating how fellows will spend the 24 months of the program
- An updated Faculty Roster, if applicable
Any participating sites added require advance approval by the Review Committee. Note that the approved complement has not automatically increased. For example, a program approved for one fellow per year continues to be approved for one fellow total rather than one per year. Programs with adequate volume for an increase in complement may apply for a permanent complement increase (only reviewed at full Review Committee meetings).
