2022 Annual Educational Conference News
The 2022 conference will be offered in a hybrid model with both in-person and virtual registration options. The ACGME will take every step to ensure a safe space to learn, engage, and connect, and will take a conservative approach to virus prevention, in alignment with the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort, the Centers for Disease Control, and federal and local government guidelines.

Session proposals are being accepted for the Conference itself and the Coordinator Forum Pre-Conference to be held February 24-26, 2022. NEW! Introduction for Sponsoring Institutions and Clinical Learning Environments for Institutional Coordinators
A pilot institutional coordinator workshop will take place in the fall of 2021, with the first of eight weekly sessions beginning Friday, October 15 from 1:00-2:30 p.m. Central. Sessions will include information on the ACGME annual accreditation cycle; the Institutional Requirements; the CLER Program; Milestones and assessments; Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in GME; the Accreditation Data System (ADS); systems-based education; and leadership. At the end of the workshop, participants will receive a certificate of completion.
Registration will open Monday, July 19 at 12:00 p.m. Central and is limited to 30 institutional coordinators on a first come, first serve basis.

Direct Supervision Using Telecommunication Technology
Effective July 1, 2021, the ACGME Common Program Requirements were updated to allow Review Committees to permit VI.A.2.c).(1).(b) as a definition of direct supervision without requiring inclusion of specialty/subspecialty-specific program requirements, which is now optional.
A list of the specialties and subspecialties that have decided to permit direct supervision using telecommunication technology effective July 1, 2021 can be found on the Common Program Requirements page under Additional Resources and the Institutional Review Committee page under Selected Topics Across Program Requirements.
Note some Review Committees are still considering whether to permit direct supervision as defined in VI.A.2.b).(1).(b), and/or considering the development of specialty/subspecialty-specific program requirements addressing this type of supervision. Updates will be provided in the ACGME e-Communication as they become available.
Selected Topics Across Program Requirements Updated
The documents under the Selected Topics Across Program Requirements heading on the Institutional Review Committee page have been updated to reflect the specialty/subspecialty-specific program requirements effective July 1, 2021. These documents are organized by topic across all Program Requirements as a useful reference for determining varying expectations among specialties.

Peer Discussion Decreases Practice Intensity and Increases Certainty in Clinical Decision-Making Among Internal Medicine Residents

This study, conducted at seven internal medicine residency programs in the Philadelphia area, assesses the impact of peer discussion on internal medicine resident practice intensity and clinical certainty. While team-based approaches to decision-making have been shown to have a positive impact through aggregation of individual judgments and team-based discussion, few studies have attempted to simulate a team-based approach to assess decision-making among physicians-in-training. This study does so, and it suggests that coming to an answer as a group may not be a matter of compromising to the middle. Rather, discussing cases could move a group toward less intense practice and more certainty in its answers, creating potential implications in the clinical setting, particularly when higher intensity practice and uncertainty correlate with lower-value care.
#LatinasInMedicine: Using the Hashtag to Build Community in Medicine

Latinas make up less than 3 percent of physicians, 2 percent of medical school faculty members, and 3 percent of 2019 medical school matriculants. This lack of representation makes it challenging for medical learners and junior faculty members to find other Latinas at their own institutions. To help meet the need for connection among this group, the authors of this Perspectives article initiated the #LatinasInMedicine hashtag in January of 2019 to create an online community that would share stories, open opportunities, amplify achievements, and create connections for each other. In two years it has accrued over 5,300 followers and averages 150,000 viewers per month. This article not only explores how this initiative has already begun to achieve its goals, but also discusses ways to continue leveraging the hashtag to bridge location, specialties, and hierarchies, while promoting personal connections and a sense of belonging.
