The 2021 ACGME Annual Educational Conference is just eight weeks away, and excitement is building! The recently announced Marvin R. Dunn Keynote Address and Closing Plenary feature two dynamic, influential, and engaging leaders who will speak on topics of interest in graduate medical education (GME) and the world at large today.
2021 Marvin R. Dunn Keynote Address: Fairness, Equity, and the Moral Determinants of Health
Donald Berwick, MD, MPP, FRCP will explore the current scientific understanding of the nature and impact of social determinants of health, and their relationship with societal commitments to equity, compassion, solidarity, and justice in this year’s Marvin Dunn Keynote. His talk will examine the possible sources of motivation to address health inequities, including the moral foundations for action, and suggest necessary and possible future roles for professional development and changes in GME to center societal action on the actual determinants of health and well-being.
Dr. Berwick is president emeritus and senior fellow, Institute for Healthcare Improvement, and is the former administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). He is one of the nation's leading authorities on health care quality and improvement. In July 2010, President Obama appointed Dr. Berwick to his CMS position, a post which he held until December 2011. He currently serves as lecturer in the Department of Health Care Policy at Harvard Medical School.
2021 Closing Plenary: Action as Antidote: Resisting the Seductive Somnolence of Racism Denial
Camara Jones, MD, MPH, PhD, senior fellow and adjunct associate professor at Morehouse School of Medicine, will discuss the behavior changes necessary in medical education to eliminate health inequalities in this year’s Closing Plenary.
Using allegories on race and racism, Dr. Jones will illuminate topics that are otherwise difficult for many Americans to understand or discuss. Recognizing that racism saps the strength of the whole society through the waste of human resources, she aims to mobilize and engage all Americans in a National Campaign Against Racism.
Dr. Jones is a past president of the American Public Health Association and was the 2019-2020 Evelyn Green Davis Fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University. She has taught at the Harvard School of Public Health, Morehouse School of Medicine, and Rollins School of Public Health, and has served as a medical officer at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The 2021 Annual Educational Conference will provide three full days of networking and virtual events, as well as a wealth of content in an interactive format designed to inform, engage, and inspire. Visit the conference web pages to browse the exceptional learning opportunities being offered.
